Gilgal: the place of a new beginning
Gilgal was the first place where the people of Israel camped after crossing the Jordan River and entering the Promised Land. After 40 years of wandering in the desert, they arrived at a place of physical and spiritual rest. Here, God asked them to be circumcised, a symbolic act of cleansing and setting apart. In Gilgal, Israel began to free itself from the “shame of Egypt,” from the memories of slavery and oppression.
The words “today I have lifted the reproach of Egypt from you” are not only a historical reference, but also a message of hope and transformation for each of us. They remind us that no matter what hardships and sufferings we have endured in the past, there comes a time when we can leave the past behind and embrace a new beginning. Gilgal symbolizes that place and moment when we can say, “Enough, I have left behind the mistakes and burdens of my old self.” Each of us has our own “Egypt” — moments of suffering, mistakes, or regrets. However, the message in Joshua encourages us not to let these experiences define us. We have the power to rise up and move forward. God always offers us a new chance, a spiritual “Gilgal” where we can start again, healed and restored.
